Chapter Events

During the school year we usually schedule two activities (field trips or other events) each month, one on the weekend and the other during the week. Pre-registration is required due to limited numbers, which can be restricted to NCNPS members. Our electronic newsletters give details. Please write ReidChapter@gmail.com to be added to the mailing list.

We also gather for an annual Holiday potluck (click here for some photos) and occasional Chapter socials throughout the year for fellowship and to share plants.

Reid Garden Workdays

amsonia

Margaret Reid Wild Flower Garden workdays are the second Saturday of the month, 10:00 am to noon December – February, and 9:00 am to noon, March – June and September -November. Contact Amy Mackintosh (ReidChapter@gmail.com) if you have questions (directions are below). Learn about landscaping with native plants, enjoy the company of other enthusiasts, and help maintain this jewel of a native plant garden. This private garden is protected by a Triangle Land Conservancy easement. The public are also encouraged to visit, appreciate, and learn during the annual Easter Open Garden, Easter Sunday, 2 – 5:00 pm. Enjoy a photo tour of the Garden.

Reid Garden Directions
The Reid Garden, 1439 Dixie Trail, Raleigh, is located at the corner of Lewis Farm Road and Dixie Trail, about 3 blocks north of Wade Avenue on Dixie Trail. Turn west onto Lewis Farm Rd from Dixie Trail. The driveway entrance is on the south side of Lewis Farm Road, a few feet from the stop sign.

Black Creek Greenway Workdays

First and third Wednesdays of the month, 10:00 am to noon November – March, and 9:00 am to 11:00 am, April – October, are workdays for our adopted section of the Black Creek Greenway in Cary. Help enhance this open space for wildlife by removing exotic invasive plants and planting natives. Contact Margaret Partridge (ReidChapter@gmail.com) to find out exact meeting location.

State Fair Demonstration Garden

Our Chapter plants and maintains a permanent garden in the Flower Show area of the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. In 2022 we added a new garden and information booth. During the State Fair, October 12-22, 2023, volunteers will staff the garden from 9 am to 5:30 pm, interacting with thousands of fair visitors, educating them on the importance of native plants and promoting our mission to the public. In addition to our dedicated volunteers, we have invited guest NC Native Plant Nurseries and other organizations that promote native plants to share a day with us. Please join us in the garden during the 2023 State Fair. Sign up here to volunteer. Enjoy the history of the project in our photo gallery.

Booths at Local Events and Festivals

The Reid Chapter has manned displays at the Monarch Festival in Durham, Arbor Day in Cary, Bass Lake Day in Holly Springs, the plant sales at the NC Botanical Garden, and the Longleaf Festival at Harris Lake Park, among others, to spread the word about native plants and our society.
