April is the perfect time to hike this beautiful greenway. It’s rated “easy” on the Carolina Thread Trail website but I would say it’s closer to moderate. Part of what makes it so lovely is the changing elevation and the rocky creek that it follows. Some of the highlights that you’re likely to see:

  • First, you can see the handiwork of our trail volunteers who have done an amazing job removing invasives. That alone is worth the visit. And, removing so many invasives has helped reveal the natural beauty and variety of plants and ecosystems along the trail.

  • Some of the plants that you’re likely to see, many blooming:

    • Pinxter Azalea (Rhododendron periclymenoides)

    • Lanceleaf Anemone (Anemone lancifolia)

    • Horsesugar (Symplocos tinctoria)

    • Dimpled Trout Lily (Erythronium umbilicatum)

    • Sweet-shrub (Calycanthus floridus)

    • Jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum)

    • Little Brown Jug (Hexastylis arifolia)

    • Little Heartleaf (Hexastylis minor)

  • You’ll also see masses of Christmas Fern, a large colony of Spicebush, an old road and millworks.
