The Fall Trip will be a one-day event.

The Sandhills Gameland is a 60,000 acre preserve located in Richmond County.  It is known as one of the best examples of Longleaf Pine habitat in the US.  The average age of the Longleaf Pine stand is over 100 years old. This habitat is down to 3% of its historic range in the US.

Found here are the rare Michaux’s Sumac and Sandhills Lily. We will have the opportunity to enjoy this site with Will Stuart, Larry Mellichamp and Lisa Gould.

Some of the plants we may get to see are Kalmia cuneata, Fothergilla gardenii, sarracenia spp., Ageratina, Liatris, Eupatorium, Agalinis, Gentiana catesbaei, and masses of Carphephorus bellidifolius!

There are 3 hike choices with time and leaders for each person to do 2 of the hikes.  You will be asked to select 2 of the 3 hikes when you register, one will be in the morning and one afternoon.  You will be given your hike assignments the morning of the hike.

The limit per hike is 20 people, so it is important to get your requests in early.  We will watch the on line registrations and any paper ones we receive in the mail and close a hike when it is filled.

  • 1. Sandhills Pocosin Shrub and Streamhead Hike:  white wicky/ fothergilla site + 2 Sarracenia and shrubs.
  • 2.Sandhills Pool Hike:  aquatic vegetation, pond margin species with a loop back through longleaf, 3 Sarracenia species and Hexastylis sorriei, and many typical shrubs.
  • 3.Longleaf Pine Tract Fall Wildflower Hike:  best of fall wildflower diversity and color in the Sandhills.

Higher profile vehicles are recommended. We can consolidate cars at our rendezvous point, which will be sent to you once you have registered.

Bring snacks or lunch, insect repellent, camera, hat, sunscreen (or rain gear), sturdy water-resistant shoes, and lots of drinking water.
