Early Women Botanist
Ever wondered if there were women botanists in the early years of the settlement of America? Well, there were! Jean, at the urging of Dr. Larry Mellichamp, has done research on this subject for many years. Learn about these women and what they did in the 1700-1900’s in the USA. Jean has and will bring books by some of these women as well as a vasculum for plant collecting. Jean Woods received her botanical education at UNCC and was a student of Dr. Larry Mellichamp. Jean is a graduate of the Certificate in Native Plant Studies program at UNCC and was involved in its establishment. She is a past President of the NCNPS and served on the board of the Catawba Lands Conservancy and the Friends of Plant Conservation. Jean has been leading wildflower walks since the 1990’s and loves being in nature.
