Our 2014 fall Trip Oct. 3-5 will take us to two of the Piedmont's most distinctive sites, Pilot Mountain State Park and Hanging Rock State Park, as well as to some protected areas in their vicinity.
The Optional Friday afternoon walk will be at Trena McNabbs garden as well as Bethania Garden. Ken Bridle will be leading the group. Friday evening we will enjoy some social time and a talk on the natural history of the area, by Dr. Ken Bridle (Stewardship Director of the Piedmont Land Conservancy and a former NCNPS president), who has extensive knowledge of the area.
Saturday Dr. Bridle will take us to some Piedmont Land Conservancy properties in the vicinity. Ken plans to take the group to the Upper section of Pilot Mountain and talk about plant life in the dryer and more rocky soil conditions. Later in the evening we will take our hike to a River section attained by the Land Conservancy. Ken said that if time allows we would do a history walk at Horn Creek Farm. Ending the evening with a catered dinner Saturday night, NCNPS artist Betty Lou Chaika will share with us some of the drawings she's made on NCNPS trips, and talk about plant communities we've visited. Sunday morning will feature walks at Hanging Rock State Park and a lake walk that includes some scenic waterfalls.
