Wildflowers will Steal the Show on this
Guided Walk near Glenville's High Falls

Everyone is invited to join friends and members of the Oconee Bell Chapter

Connie Thompson will lead a breathtaking 2-part wildflower hike!

Meander with us along a rather flat part of the trail below high falls in Glenville, NC to see Trilliums and other wildflowers at the West Fork of the Tuckasegee River.

Witness a stunning display of native wildflowers bursting into bloom, with vibrant reds and soft pinks carpeting the landscape. Take your time on the trails, soaking in the beauty and capturing photos. Walking sticks are encouraged for added stability. You can learn more about the lower portion of high falls trail here

WHEN: April 13, 2026, Monday, 11 am - 3:00 pm

WHAT: Guided hike in two parts, bring-your-own camera, a walking stick, water and a picnic lunch.

WHERE: Park at the Pines Recreation Area to meet us at 11 am on Monday April 13. The address for parking is 1966 Pine Creek Rd, Cullowee, NC 28723.

  1. Head north on NC-107 from Cashiers for about 7 miles.
  2. Turn left onto Pine Creek Road.
  3. Continue on Pine Creek Road for approximately 2 miles.
  4. The parking lot will be on your right just past the dam.
  5. There are two parts to this outing. Part 1 starts with a car pool to Shoal Creek Mountain Road. Parking is limited and only on the right shoulder of Shoal Creek Mountain Road. Let us know if you want to be one of the drivers.

Part 1. Starting at Shoal Creek Mountain Road we will meander a quarter mile down an easy trail starting at 2840 ft altitude along a gentle drop to 2750 ft elevation. Along the way we will see mayapple, tiger lily, Trillium, and a multitude of other beautiful spring wildflowers along a creekside wall - perfect for photography!

Pack essentials like water and a lunch snack to enjoy on the rocks beside a bridge at beautiful Shoal Creek. Plan for a leisurely stay of more than an hour at this location – we won't want to rush this glorious display of nature!

Gather at 12:45 near the car pool vehicles for the drive back to the Pine Creek Recreation Area.

Part 2. Starting near the dam at the Pine Creek Recreation Area we will follow the High Falls Trailhead from 3,500 feet altitude where native plants along the gravel trail are recovering from dam work damage. Part 2 is a more challenging walk because the trail has an elevation drop of about 260 feet along a distance less than half a mile with stairs and a handrail along the steep portions. Those who continue with us on part 2 will observe an amazing diversity of flowers with several types of Trillium, cohosh, and a wonderful display of scents and colors. At several flat parts of this trail we have spotted wild geranium, Dutchman's breeches, and showy orchid. You will be amazed by uniquely different native plants at these two different parts of the trail.
